Exciting overs, gripping match, and an incredible win – that is how the match between the two table toppers looks like.
In the 50th match of VIVO IPL 2021, Delhi capitals won by three wickets defeating the previous 1st position holders, Chennai Super Kings.
Gaining 20 points in 13 matches and just three matches lost, Delhi Capitals have become the toppers of the league matches. With this win, they have also increased their chances of getting an extra shot at reaching the IPL finals of this season.
Even though the Super Kings gave a tough fight to the Capitals, it was Delhi that emerged as winners with two deliveries to spare. Although Chennai Super Kings made a few changes in their team by replacing KM Asif, Sam Curran, and Suresh Raina with Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, and Robin Uthappa, they couldn’t lead the team to the win. DC also brought in debutant Ripal Patel in place of Steve Smith to change some gears in the team.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals won the toss and were elected to the bowl where Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 16 runs, but Faf du Plessis was dismissed by Axar Patel in the third over. Not long after du Plessis, Gaikwad also was dismissed by Anrich Nortje towards the fifth over.
After the opening duo fell, Axar and R Ashwin continued to chip the players from CSK. With Axar dismissing Moeen Ali and R Ashwin taking the better of Uthappa, CSK was reduced to 62/4.
After the key players fell, it was Rayudu and Dhoni who held the fort after that. They completed a 50-run stand, and their partnership took the team cross the 100-run mark in the 17th over. Rayudu added fours and sixes off Avesh Khan and brought up a half-century for himself. CSK ended its innings with 136/5.
Chennai Super Kings needed some early wickets, and they did get it in the form of Prithvi Shaw, who was dismissed by Deepak Chahar in the third over. Although Shaw was in the mood for the long haul, Chahar had different plans.
Shikhar Dhawan counterattacked Chahar in the fifth over, depositing the ball in all corners of the park. He creamed off fours and sixes, putting up a score of 51 runs off the power play. However, CSK struck back in the final over of the powerplay, dismissing Shreyas Iyer through Josh Hazlewood.
DC skipper Rishabh Pant came welding his willow wild and got some good moves which took him to 15 in no time. Ravindra Jadeja got the better of Rishabh Pant and dismissed him in the 10th over. The dismissal of Pant got the debutant Ripal Patel to the crease, and he did use some good moves along with Dhawan to take the team past 90.
CSK then tried to counter the run-spree by getting Ripal out and dismissing Ravichandran Ashwin and Dhawan through Shradul in the 15th over that reduced 99/6.
Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel kept scoring for Capitals, putting up a 36-run stand. Finally, needing 28 from the last three overs to reach the target of 137, they picked 12 runs and got ten off Josh Hazlewood. DC completed the match with two balls to spare even though they lost Axar Patel in the final over.
Despite being under pressure, DC played some decent shots and took Delhi Capitals home. Axar Patel was awarded as the man of the match for his phenomenal 2/18 (4) & 5 (10) scores.
Players Talk
Axar Patel (Player of the Match)
“You try to stick to the basics but as the match goes you have to assess the lengths and the pace on this track. I think their batters got 5 or 10 less in the Powerplay and that proved to be the difference in the end. Hetmyer told me to tap and run instead of going for a sweep owing to the large dimensions of the ground so that was the plan. It is very important for your confidence if you win a game like this and head into the knockouts, it gives us a lot of confidence.”
Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals Captain)
“Not a bad birthday present but it was a tough match again for us. But we ended up winning so everything is fine I guess. They came hard at us in the Powerplay and got away but we bowled some good overs after that. They got away with some extra runs in the end but Shikhi got us off to a decent start in the Powerplay. It got very close but we did well to cross over the line. Everyone knows that that’s how they play and we started well. We got what we needed from Shaw. We were just trying to keep the left-right combination going. A big win for us since we wanted to finish first or second and if we had won this we knew we would finish in the top two so I am really happy.”
MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings Captain)
“We were looking to get closer to 150. After we lost a few wickets I think the platform was nice during the 15th over but we failed to accelerate. I think there were a few short deliveries we failed to connect with and they ended up as singles and if we had those 8-10 deliveries we could have got close to 150. It was a two-paced wicket. The normal deliveries held on the surface slightly and it was not easy to play your shots. The Delhi batters also faced that and I think the taller bowlers were able to use the wicket to good effect. It was a very good effort to make a game out of it. We knew they would come hard but it was important to not give too many in the first six overs. There was that one big over in the first six but that happens when there are quality batters in the middle.”
