Now that was a match that brought us to the edges of our seats and kept us hooked to the chair until the last over.
What started as a disappointment for the Chennai Super Kings fans turned into sheer joy as they won by 20 runs. Despite showing poor performance at first, CSK managed to hold Mumbai Indians at 136 runs in 20 overs.
Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings’s victory against Mumbai Indians in the 30th IPL match on a Sunday was a nail-biting experience for the audience. MS Dhoni praised a well-deserving duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo for their fantastic batting after the team was witnessing regular wickets in the first half of the match at the Dubai International Stadium.

Despite an early collapse, CSK managed to finish off in style with 156 for six in 20 overs.
During the match, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Adam Milne picked up two wickets each.
Mumbai Indians struck the opposite team hard in the first over of the innings, with Boult dismissing Faf du Plessis for a duck. Continuing the power play, Milne and Boult dismissed Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina in the next two overs to reduce CSK to 7/3, which shook CSK.
This later became 24/4 with Milne getting MS Dhoni’s wicket, and to add to the gravity, Ambati Rayudu retired after getting hit on the elbow. The poor performance in the first half brought down the projected score of Chennai Super Kings to 112
Ruturaj Gaikwad showed a phenomenal performance by covering up the team’s early losses with an unbeaten score of 88 runs off 58 balls. Meanwhile, supporting Ruturaj on this continuous run spree, Bravo also slammed 23 runs in eight deliveries in the later stages of their innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad hit his 6th IPL fifty in the first innings and finished on 88 as CSK landed on 156 runs.
CSK’s excellent fielding set up MS Dhoni’s fantastic wicket keeping allowed Mumbai Indians only to muster 136 runs chasing a target of 157 set by CSK.
While CSK was disappointed with the 24/4 score with their key players like Dhoni, Du Plessis, Moeen, and Raina returning from the pitch, they brought back their aggressive form in restricting MI.
Under the pressure from CSK, MI lost their gameplay when Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya were knocked out, leaving the team with 94/6. Deepak Chahar also went on dismissing Quinton de Kock to give CSK their first breakthrough which was followed by the wicket of Anmolpreet Singh that Chahar clean bowled.
Shardul Thakur brought an exceptional turn to the game by getting the big wicket of Suryakumar Yadav in his first over.
Speaking about this exciting match during the post-match press conference, Dhoni said, “At 30 for 4, you want to put up a respectable score. I felt Gaikwad and Bravo got us more than we expected. We thought of 140, and getting close to 160 was tremendous.”
Dhoni also added to the statement that the wicket was “two-paced,” which made CSK’s start a little slow against MI. He also said that Rayudu’s injury made it hard for the team to bounce back.
He stated, “The wicket was two-paced, slightly slow to start. Also, it’s difficult if you’re batting lower down, if you don’t get a chance to see what is happening, you want to go hard. Rayudu got injured, so it was tough to come back from there, but we batted sensibly and finished superbly. It was sensible for one batter to bat right through to the end.”
Although the game appeared done from the CSKs end at a very early stage as Chennai lost their four wickets inside the Powerplay. But Ruturaj Gaikwad gave a strong finish to the team and handed Mumbai Indians a challenging total. The heat started to turn up as Mumbai also lost three wickets in the first six overs, making it equally hard for MI to chase the final score by CSK.
Even though Saurabh Tiwary held one end firmly, the wickets kept falling at the other end, making it difficult for MI to win. Kieron Pollard’s wicket made it tough for the defending champions to deal with the required rate and failed to win for their team.
This is the second occasion in the history of IPL that a team batting first was 24 down for four but still went on to win the game and how.
This tremendous win of CSK has also helped them in scoring a good start to the tournament’s second UAE leg. Chennai Super Kings have climbed to the top of the IPL 2021 Points Table, with 12 points in eight matches, while Mumbai is still down under with eight points from eight games.
CSK owes this win to Ruturaj Gaikwad and his stellar performance throughout the game! Take a bow, Gaikwad.
