The tremendous performance of CSK in the second leg of IPL gave it away that this team is undefeatable. Their last win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on 30th September knocked the last nail in the coffin and paved the way for the playoffs for the three-time champions.
They have proven that consistent performance is the key to winning, and the same has helped them seal their spot in the final four.
In the 44th match of the VIVO IPL 2021 in Sharjah, Chennai Super Kings were keen on keeping things in control with the ball that limited SRH to 134/9. It was not a nightmare for the men in yellow to chase the target, and they managed to do so in 19.4 overs & with six wickets in hand. With this, they registered their ninth win of this IPL season.

As far as the performance by SRH is concerned, they were put into first order and managed to take just five runs in the first two overs. The game was put into third gear where Wriddhiman Saha stole two sixes off Deepak Chahar in the third over.
However, the happiness didn’t last long, and CSK celebrated their first success by dismissing Jason Roy in the fourth over through Josh Hazlewood.
Even though SRH finished the powerplay at a decent score of 41/1, they lost their second wicket as Dwayne Bravo trapped Kane Williamson before the wickets. Following the dismissal of Williamson, Priyam Garg and Saha also added 23 runs, but the two got out in the space of eight runs where Bravo took away Garg, and Jadeja dismissed Saha for 44.
The dismissal of Saha brought joy to Dhoni’s fans as Dhoni took his 100th IPL catch as the CSK wicketkeeper.
SRH was taken past 100 by the efforts of Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad, but Hazlewood’s double-wicket in the 17th over brought down the hopes of SRH. Sharul Thakur ended the innings of SRH by getting Holder out by limiting the team to 134.
Chennai stirred up an amazing performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the maximum credits for taking the team home goes out to the bowlers – Josh Hazlewood (3/24) and Dwayne Bravo (2/17). They restricted SRH to 134 after Dhoni opted to bowl first.
In the first three overs, Sunrisers believed they had a good chance as both the CSK batters looked sluggish in their approach. But then Ruturaj jumped down the track against Bhuvneshwar and turned up the heat in the stadium that lasted for quite a few overs giving a lead to the winning team.
Faf du Plessis, along with Ruturaj Gaikwad, smashed some impressive runs that set the platform for CSK that led towards a comfortable win. After ten overs in the chase, the duo put up a half-century stand and took the side to 75/0.
After the 10th over, it was a sigh of relief for the Sunrisers as Jason Holder dismissed Gaikwad for 45, giving his team a much-needed break-through. This continued for the next few overs, where Rashid Khan and Holder shared three wickets, dismissing Moeen, Suresh Raina, and Faf du Plessis.
After the quick dismissals, CSK turned up with their walls of defense with Rayudu and Dhoni that steered the ship and took the team home. The match was ended by Dhoni’s spectacular six and some cheers in the stadium by CSK fans.
The key players of Chennai Super Kings Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, and Ambati Rayudu scored 45, 41, and 17, respectively, and Josh Hazlewood was awarded as the man of the match.
Player’s Talk
Kane Williamson
“Not quite enough runs. The first half wasn’t our best, Although we didn’t get enough on the board, we were competitive enough. If we get 10-15 more, we could have come back. We were around 40 after the powerplay overs which wasn’t that bad. We saw some cameos from the youngsters that gave us a fighting chance. It’s hard when you turn up on the losing side. They played well and they are on top of the points table. Ultimately, it’s about if you can etch out another 10-15 runs. They played better. Everybody has their losses but you need to pick yourself and build upon it.”
MS Dhoni
“I think it means a lot, of course. We said as a team that we want to come back strong. We are known for that and there was a lot at stake. We have to admit when things are tough that not a lot of things go your way. I think the boys have done really well to keep going. I think every credit needs to be given to players and the support staff. I think the wicket was a difficult one. It was not spinning or bouncing much. The bounce was coming to your knee height and to your waist with the same length. The bowlers adjusted well varied their pace and length. Bowled in the right channels. That’s what I told them earlier. Whenever they came up to bowl, they bowled the right line. With a bit of dew, it becomes slightly easy. The bounce didn’t change much. The ball was coming at a nice length. To the fans, they have been great. We do not utter a lot about the performance. I would request them to be humble and respect each and everyone.”
Josh Hazlewood (Player of the Match)
“Very satisfying. Putting a lot of hard work, Little things within the game. It’s always great to remove Jason Roy and put the pressure right back on them. I think the wicket offered a little bit on the slower side. We know the last four-five overs are important, been working in the nets, nice to see it coming right on the ground. It’s good to learn from DJ Bravo over the last few weeks too, and it’s been a great learning curve for me.”
